Laurent Brossoit clears waivers and is assigned to Rockford, giving the Blackhawks more trade flexibility with the veteran goalie.
Laurent Brossoit is Rockford-bound after clearing waivers on Monday, the Chicago Blackhawks officially announced.
The veteran goaltender will report to the AHL’s Rockford IceHogs, providing the Blackhawks with added roster flexibility and opening up options for both parties as the season progresses.
The Blackhawks originally signed Brossoit ahead of the 2024-25 season, hoping his experience would stabilize the crease for a rebuilding team. However, injuries derailed his campaign, and the organization traded for Spencer Knight, who quickly claimed the No. 1 goaltender spot. With Arvid Soderblom seemingly locked in as the Blackhawks’ backup goalie and Drew Commesso also in the pipeline, Brossoit became the odd man out on Chicago’s goalie depth chart.
By clearing waivers unclaimed, Brossoit becomes more attractive in potential trade talks. Any team acquiring him can now assign him to the AHL without needing to keep him on the NHL roster for the required 30 days, a common sticking point for goaltenders returning to the league after time away, as was the case with Brossoit, who hasn’t appeared in an NHL game in over two years.

While the waiver process may not have been ideal for Brossoit, returning to Rockford gives him an opportunity to continue playing regular games and regain his form, which could ultimately attract another NHL suitor seeking experienced depth for a playoff push or injury insurance.
For now, the IceHogs get a steady pro presence in the crease as the Blackhawks keep their young goalie corps developing in Chicago.
