Evgeni Malkin
The Pittsburgh Penguins are in a funk, but there was some measure of good news Wednesday morning at the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex, with three injured players working out ahead of practice.
Forwards Evgeni Malkin, Blake Lizotte and Filip Hallander all skated and worked out together on the ice.
Malkin, the team’s second-line center and one of its core players, has eight goals, 29 points in 26 games — still good for second on the team. He has missed the past six games and earlier this month went on IR and was listed as being out week to week. He skated at least once last weekend, as reported by SportsNet Pittsburgh.
Lizotte also is on IR. He has been out the past five games and, at the same time as Malkin, was listed as being out week to week. He has been a strong energy player who has been strong on the fourth line and as a penalty killer. He has three goals, five points in 26 games. It’s not known if this was his first time back on the ice.
Hallander, a promising forward who returned after playing in his native Sweden, had four points, including his first NHL goal, in 13 games before he was sidelined because of a blood clot. He is expected to be out several more weeks.
The session with the three was fairly spirited, with Malkin especially vocal.
None returned to join the main practice.
