SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah Mammoth have been struggling to find their footing this season in the landscape of the NHL’s frozen tundra.

Consistency for an extended stretch has been elusive, leading to extreme highs and lows in the season’s first 35 games.

Mammoth GM Bill Armstrong joined Hans & Scotty on KSL Sports Zone on Tuesday, December 16, to discuss the club’s inconsistency and the impact of a brutal early-season schedule.

“We’re one of the only teams that have played 34 games (now 35),” Armstrong highlighted.

Entering Wednesday night’s matchup against Detroit, the Mammoth and the New York Rangers are the only teams to have played 35 games this season. Unlike the Rangers, who have played 18 games on the road, Utah has played on road ice in 21 games (60 percent) this season.

The daunting schedule has made it nearly impossible for the team to generate momentum.

“Where we are right now, to be honest with you, is where we expected to be,” Armstrong said. “We got off to a little better start than we thought, but in reality, this is where we thought we’d be right in this grind. If we could grind through this and stay in the race right up until Christmas, our schedule breaks a little bit and gets a little bit easier.”

Mammoth players lend a hand to snowed-in Pittsburgh traffic

Before facing the Pittsburgh Penguins to open the current road trip, a snowstorm wreaked havoc on the Steel City.

Snow made it difficult for the team bus to reach the game, but that was nothing compared to a lucky motorist whose vehicle was freed by several Mammoth players.

It’s not every day you see a group of well-dressed men getting their boots dirty.

“It really shows you what kind of people you have on this team and what kind of people hockey players are in general,” Armstrong boasted. “There are some unbelievable kids on our team, and they’re not only good hockey players, they’re good human beings. That’s what you love about our sport. From the hospital visits, to the school visits,to getting out to the rinks for the kids. Our guys, it’s just part of who they are, and they love to give back to the community.”

Bill Armstrong offers Alexander Kerfoot update

Injuries to Alexander Kerfoot and Logan Cooley have cost both players several games already this season, but Armstrong gave a positive update on Kerfoot.

Cooley is expected to be out for at least two months, while Kerfoot’s return is expected soon after an abdominal injury kept him out of the lineup to this point.

“He’s close, I think he’s going to be right after Christmas,” Armstrong said of Kerfoot, who is traveling and practicing with the team. “He can play from the first line to the fourth line, and he’s just one of the best penalty killers in the league.”

With Logan Cooley expected to be out until after the Olympic break, Kerfoot’s return offers much-needed reinforcements.

“He’s going to be a huge add for our team coming back in,” Armstrong stated.
