Candidates have begun to emerge to take over the Vancouver Canucks’ captaincy from blueliner Quinn Hughes, after he was dealt to the Minnesota Wild last week.
The Vancouver Canucks are entering a period of transition after President of Hockey Operations Jim Rutherford made the decision to trade captain Quinn Hughes to the Minnesota Wild last Friday and in return, the club received a package that’ll certainly give their retool/rebuild a big boost, headlined by future number one defenseman Zeev Buium. As Quinn Hughes enjoys early success with the Minnesota Wild, with two points in two games, one big question remains for Adam Foote’s squad – who will be the next captain of the Vancouver Canucks and when will the club decide to appoint one?
For now, it appears that Adam Foote and his coaching staff will be opting to go with a rotation of alternate captains following the inclusion of Filip Hronek to the leadership group last weekend, but some candidates have begun to emerge to wear the ‘C’ next for the Vancouver Canucks.
Candidates begin to emerge to replace Quinn Hughes as Vancouver Canucks captain
In an article for Daily Hive this week, Trevor Beggs examined some options for the Vancouver Canucks’ next captain, whether they name someone this season or next, and it looks like Head Coach Adam Foote and his staff are going to have a handful of names to go through.
Among the potential options to wear the ‘C’ for the Vancouver Canucks include players like Elias Pettersson, Brock Boeser, Marcus Pettersson, Jake DeBrusk, Filip Hronek and Conor Garland, all of whom are locked up for several years, but Beggs also suggests Kiefer Sherwood, however that would likely depend on him signing a contract extension with the club in the coming months.
At this point, it feels like the Vancouver Canucks are going to go without a captain for the remainder of the 2025-26 season, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing as it’ll give Adam Foote an opportunity to evaluate his options and ultimately name one in training camp next September.
