A National Hockey League insider has given an update on trade rumors involving Vancouver Canucks forward Kiefer Sherwood, who is expected to be moved by March 6th.
Towards the end of November, with the club approaching the bottom of the National Hockey League’s overall standings, the Vancouver Canucks decided to make all of their pending UFAs available on the trade market, including Kiefer Sherwood who is coming of a solid campaign in 2024-25 where he set career-highs in goals, assists and points and broke the record for most hits in a season.
“According to several sources, the Vancouver Canucks have let it be known that – in an effort to get younger – they are willing to listen to offers on ‘veteran players.'” Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman said.
To the surprise of no one, Kiefer Sherwood has drawn the most interest of any of Vancouver’s pending unrestricted free agents, with the Canucks reportedly seeking a first round pick as well as another asset in return and on Wednesday, Rick Dhaliwal of Donnie & Dhali gave an update on rumors surrounding the 30-year-old winger.
NHL insider gives update on trade rumors involving Vancouver Canucks’ Kiefer Sherwood
On yesterday’s edition of Donnie & Dhali, Rick Dhaliwal reported that teams are continuing to show interest in Kiefer Sherwood despite his offensive struggles of late and he believes the Vancouver Canucks should get this done sooner rather than later given the demand for him.
Dhaliwal said that the Canucks don’t want to go past $3-3.5 million on a new contract with Sherwood and with the forward expected to get more in the summer, it makes sense to part ways with him soon, adding that Rutherford and Allvin are still trying to get a first round pick for him.
“Kiefer Sherwood. I just wanted to say that despite Sherwood scoring one goal in 13 games, a bunch of teams are still in on him. Canucks should move this guy sooner than later, start a clean slate. You know they’re not signing him. The Canucks don’t want to go past $3-3.5 million for Sherwood, you know he’s going to get more on July 1st. There’s a bunch of teams in on him because his salary is low, $1.5 million. Canucks are still trying to get a first rounder for him.” Dhaliwal said.
With upwards of a dozen teams showing interest in Kiefer Sherwood over the last three weeks, it certainly feels like the Vancouver Canucks will get what they’re asking for for him, but we’ll have to wait and see what that return actually looks like when the time comes.
Given that the NHL’s holiday roster freeze goes into effect on Saturday, it seems unlikely that Sherwood will be moved within the next 36-48 hours and that this could linger into early 2026, potentially even being punted to after the Olympic break in February.
