MONTREAL — There were few cheers from the Dad’s section of the Canadian Tire Centre Thursday as the Pittsburgh Penguins were controlled for most of the competitive portion of the game in a 4-0 loss to the Ottawa Senators.

At the start of the annual Dad’s trip, the Penguins were brimming with optimism and good times, but those came crashing to the ice Thursday.

Sure, the refs’ botched calls were harmful. One goalie was called for tripping after a poke-check, and the other had a goal waived off after his own defenseman contacted him.

Otherwise, where were the Penguins? Where was the fight and pushback? There are deeper issues with the Penguins, and it is time to begin exploring them at this level, with the assumption, if not expectation, that the same is happening at the management level, too.
