Former Toronto Maple Leafs GM Kyle Dubas’ job with the Pittsburgh Penguins following the sale of the team appears to be secure, for now.

One of the biggest hockey stories taking place off the ice at the moment is undoubtedly the sale of the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Former Leafs GM Kyle Dubas’ fate revealed after Pittsburgh Penguins Sale

The sale raised many questions right from the get-go, and a big one involved the fate of current president of hockey operations and general manager for the Pittsburgh Penguins, former Toronto Maple Leafs GM Kyle Dubas.

The Penguins have struggled since Dubas took over after leaving the Maple Leafs in 2023, and there has been speculation over whether he would keep his job with someone new in charge. Those questions have now been answered.

While the Hoffman family takeover still requires the approval of the NHL’s board of governors, a news release from the organization states clearly that Dubas is staying, and he will “continue to set the vision and oversee all aspects of the team’s on-ice strategy in his role as President of Hockey Operations and General Manager.”

Dubas to remain with Penguins after team gets sold

While a couple of years isn’t long to turn around the fortunes of an aging NHL club, I’m certain more progress is something everyone would like to see. But, the statement from the new owners appears to give Dubas the leeway he needs to oversee the eventual trades of guys like Evgeni Malkin, and perhaps even Sidney Crosby, while they still have value.

I’m unconvinced this will be seen as a good move by Penguins fans over the next two to three years. Maple Leafs GM Brad Treliving has definitely had his own share of issues to deal with since coming to Toronto, some of which are the direct result of moves made by former GM Kyle Dubas.
