DETROIT – Moritz Seider is on pace to score more goals, tally more points and post the best plus-minus rating of his career, while continuing to log the most minutes on the team playing against the opposition’s best players.

The Detroit Red Wings leader on the blue line has taken his game to an even higher level.

“Some of the best hockey I think the league has seen right now,” Red Wings goaltender Cam Talbot said. “As far as a defenseman, you look around the league, I don’t know how you don’t put him in the top three for the Norris conversation right now. So good to have a guy like that on our team and he just steps up time and time again in big moments like that. He expects that from himself, we expect it from him. And he’s delivering this year in full force.”

Seider delivered Sunday, scoring with 24 seconds remaining in overtime for a 3-2 victory over Washington at Little Caesars Arena and weekend sweep of the Capitals.

Seider has six goals, 27 points and a plus-13 rating in 37 games. His career highs are nine goals, 50 points and a minus-5.

“I’d say less is more,” Seider said. “Just really let the game come to you, not force things. … Back in the day, you might chase it too much. You’ll be too close to the defender. And now you just want to make sure you have four guys around who can move the puck, and you just got to be in the right spot.”

Red Wings coach Todd McLellan said Seider’s defensive play is leading to more offense.

“I think he’s defending really well and he’s not busy. He’s not all over the place. He’s just nice and calm, reading plays, killing them,” McLellan said. “And all of a sudden, he’s got some energy to go on offense. He’s picking his spots well. I think he’s using his shot a lot more. He’s not necessarily deferring to playmaking.

“He rang one off the bar on the power play. In the past, I think he would have been looking off for another play, but he actually used the shot, and he’s got a real good one when he gets it off.”

The 6-3 Seider and 6-6 Edvinsson has formed a strong top defense pairing.

“They don’t give up a whole lot, tough to get around,” Talbot said. “They got great sticks around the net. They box out. If there is a rebound laying there, they clear it for us. They block big shots on the PK and they contribute offensively. Can’t say enough good things about those two.”

Said McLellan: “Their ability to defend is what really helps our team right now. Their length. Just when you think you’re in trouble, all of a sudden, Simon stick’s coming through and breaking something up, or Mo’s doing that. They can handle heavy minutes, aggressive minutes. So, we’re happy with their play. We need them to continue it.”
