HASTINGS — Amelia Ranfranz had an outstanding night in goal, stopping all 35 shots she faced, to backstop Mayo to a 4-0 non-conference girls hockey win at Hastings on Tuesday.
Ranfranz recorded her second varsity shutout by stopping 16 shots in the first period, eight in the second and 11 in the third.
Mayo’s offense provided her plenty of breathing room, too.
Abby Weick scored a momentum-turning goal with 16 seconds left in the first period to make it 1-0.
The Spartans tacked on three more goals in the second, thanks to great specialty teams play. Maggie McLaughlin scored on a power play 4:18 into the period, then Olivia Dahl scored a short-handed goal just 32 seconds later.
Just two and a half minutes after Dahl’s goal, McLaughlin and Dahl set up Taylor Kurtz for an even-strength goal and a 4-0 lead.
Mayo (5-4-1 overall) is now off until Monday, when it plays in the opening round of the Winona Invitational.

Our newsroom occasionally reports stories under a byline of “staff.” Often, the “staff” byline is used when rewriting basic news briefs that originate from official sources, such as a city press release about a road closure, and which require little or no reporting. At times, this byline is used when a news story includes numerous authors or when the story is formed by aggregating previously reported news from various sources. If outside sources are used, it is noted within the story.
