If Marc-Andre Fleury wants to play NHL hockey this season, he’ll have every opportunity to. Fleury’s name has been making the rounds of late, and there’s been multiple reports stating he’s been contacted about making a comeback for numerous teams.
Fleury, 41, signed a one-week contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins before this season started, and had himself a great week ‘retiring’ as a Penguin, which included playing in one preseason game. It gave Fleury one last chance to play alongside Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and Kris Letang, but it turns out, that might not be the last we see of Fleury.
Fleury’s been talking with the Edmonton Oilers, and they are certainly the favorites to landing the future hall-of-fame goaltender. However, recently, insider Pierre Lebrun sees the Tampa Bay Lightning as a perfect destination for one of the game’s greats.Â
Several teams have reached out of late to see if Fleury would be inclined to come out of retirement. I’m not sure how likely it is to happen, but the fact that teams have reached out is interesting in itself.
Jonas Johansson hasn’t been bad. His .897 save percentage and 4.1 saves above expected (per MoneyPuck) are solid for a No. 2 goalie.
But my theory here is that if something should happen injury-wise to Andrei Vasilevskiy in the playoffs — and he’s been dinged up more than a few times over the past few seasons, including this one — imagine having the insurance of a future Hockey Hall of Fame goalie in Fleury?
Keep an eye on the Oilers and Lightning as the two teams who are battling it out to sign Fleury. At this point, it seems like there’s a 50/50 chance he comes out of ‘retirement’.
