Leafs practice news: Woll projected to start vs. Senators, Carlo resumes skating, Sullivan to work with Lalonde on power play

It was an eventful morning skate, following a three-day holiday hiatus, as the Toronto Maple Leafs host the Ottawa Senators on Saturday.

“Great to have Sully here,” Maple Leafs head coach Craig Berube said, following Saturday’s morning skate. “We all knew Sully coming in and working with the Marlies this year. He was a long time NHL player, a good player and an offensive guy. So brought him in here to help us and work with the power play.”

Berube indicated that Sullivan will be working on conjunction with assistant Derek Lalonde on the team’s power play.

“They’re working together, but eventually, just working with him, getting accustomed to how we do things. Just talking through different looks and scenarios on the power play.”

Oliver Ekman-Larsson played with Sullivan during their shared tenure with the-then Arizona Coyotes, and shared his impressions of the Leafs’ new assistant.

“Played with Sully. I’m getting old. He’s a smart guy. Over 1,000 games (played). He’s a power play guy. Good to see. He’s a skilled guy and a really hard worker,” Ekman-Larsson said.

Brandon Carlo resumed skating prior to Saturday’s formal session. Carlo underwent foot surgery on December 3, and hasn’t played since November 13. It was initially believed that Carlo could return by late November, but he suffered a setback in his recovery, and underwent surgery shortly thereafter. Carlo skated alongside Dakota Mermis on Saturday morning.

Berube ruled out the possibility of Carlo returning imminently, noting that he needs to practice in a full capacity.
