In Tampa Bay, the name Jacob Fowler has suddenly taken center stage, as the Montreal Canadiens have confirmed he will start in goal on Sunday.

Anthony Marcotte took the idea even further. In his view, Fowler is the number one right now, and possibly for a long time.

He even adds a striking line: Fowler may have played his last game in the American Hockey League.

Anthony Marcotte delivers a message Kent Hughes needs to hear about Jacob Fowler

The message is simple, and it is aimed directly at Kent Hughes. If the organization truly believes in Fowler, it has to make room for him.

In real terms, that means managing three goaltenders, managing ice time, and accepting that one decision will inevitably upset someone.

We also know why this situation is sensitive. Montembeault is coming off a conditioning stint in Laval, where he made two starts in Cleveland.

He allowed five goals on 52 shots, making 47 saves over two games. The plan was to clean up details, not to tear everything down.

However, Fowler’s strong performances are changing the equation.

“He’s the number one right now. And he very likely will be for years to come.

My feeling? He’s played his last game in the American Hockey League. The Canadiens are in the process of making room for him.”

With Fowler, Montembeault, and Dobes all in the picture, the Canadiens are facing a familiar three-goalie dilemma.

It puts pressure on the group in front of him, and it also places Dobes in a role that is not clearly defined.

Is Marcotte right to talk about a last game in the American League? It is early to carve that in stone.

That said, when you name a young goaltender as the starter while Montembeault is there, you accept that the discussion will move beyond the locker room.

If Kent Hughes wants to avoid a three-goalie soap opera, he will have to make a decision sooner rather than later.

In the meantime, Sunday in Tampa Bay gives Fowler a golden opportunity to make the debate even louder.
