The Calgary Flames had a big piece of their franchise history pass away over the weekend.
Guy Chouinard, who scored the first goal for the Flames after relocating to Calgary, passed away on Sunday at the age of 69. His passing was announced by the QMJHL, a league in which Chouinard spent three seasons with the Quebec Remparts from 1971 to 1974.
“It is with great sadness that we learned of the passing of Guy Chouinard at the age of 69,” a tweet from the QMJHL reads. “A dominant player for the Quebec Remparts from 1971 to 1975, he went on to record 575 points in 578 games in the NHL.
“Our deepest sympathies to [his son] Éric and to all the loved ones of the great Guy Chouinard.”

The Atlanta Flames drafted Chouinard with the 28th overall selection in 1974. He went on to spend parts of six seasons playing for the Flames in Atlanta, which included a career-high 50 goals and 107 points during the 1978-79 season. He also suited up for three seasons with the Flames in Calgary, a stretch that saw him rack up 235 points in just 196 games.
The Flames wound up trading Chouinard to the St. Louis Blues following the 1982-83 season. He spent just one season with the Blues, where he had 46 points in 64 games. He would then go on to play nine games in the IHL with the Peoria Rivermen in 1984-85, before opting to retire.
Chouinard continued to remain part of the hockey community following retirement, as he spent a combined eight seasons as a head coach in the QMJHL in stints with the Longueuil Chevaliers, Victoriaville Tigres, Laval Titan College Francais, Remparts, and the Prince Edward Island Rocket. His last season behind the bench came in 2009-10.
