Ravaged by injuries, the Leafs got good news on Anthony Stolarz at Wednesday’s practice, but that was followed by a disheartening update on Chris Tanev’s injury.
Tuesday, the Leafs played one of their most complete games of the season, resulting in a 4-0 win over former head coach Sheldon Keefe and the New Jersey Devils. The win itself was impressive, but what was more impressive was how well the team played without Auston Matthews, Chris Tanev, William Nylander, or Dakota Joshua as they were all held out with injuries they suffered over the weekend.
Berube Provides Disheartening Update on Tanev
Injured in Sunday’s overtime loss to the Detroit Red Wings, Tanev did not play on Tuesday as the team waited for more test results.
Unfortunately for Tanev and the Leafs, the rugged defenceman appears to be headed back to injured reserve for a while, according to head coach Craig Berube.
“Chris Tanev is going to miss some time, significant time. Groin. They’re looking at things going forward here, so I’m not going to speculate on what they’re going to exactly do, but he’s going to be out a while,” shared Berube following practice.
Anthony Stolarz Takes Big Step Forward In Recovery
Held off of the ice since suffering an upper-body injury on November 11th, Anthony Stolarz took to the ice for the first time on Wednesday.
While Berube said there was no timetable for his return, it was a massive step forward for the New Jersey native. In the meantime, Joseph Woll and Dennis Hildeby will continue to rotate in the crease for the Leafs.
An optional practice on Wednesday saw Auston Matthews take to the ice after missing Tuesday’s game with a lower-body injury. Nylander, on the other hand, remained off the ice after missing the last two games with a lower-body injury.
Following practice, Berube was hopeful Nylander would be able to return to the ice on Thursday, while revealing that Dakota Joshua remains in Detroit after suffering a kidney injury on Sunday.
It was a good news, bad news day for the Leafs on the injury front on Wednesday, but hopefully they will get more good news with Stolarz, Matthews and Nylander in the coming days.
