With Quinn Hughes leaving the Vancouver Canucks, they are in search of a new leader for the young core coming in, and Connor Garland has shown he is that leader.

The forward has shown zero fear, and it’s shown through the amount of times he fights, despite his stature.

“Garland is a key player to the Canucks, even more so now that Hughes is gone. With some young talent coming with Zeev Biuum, Marco Rossi and Liam Ohmgren, Garland will need to provide leadership to them, to maximize their performance. Let’s just hope Garland hasn’t completely lost hope in the team just yet.”-Stinson

Connor Garland needs to lead the way for the Vancouver Canucks going forward.

Ben Kuzma of the Province reported on the example Garland has been setting for the Canucks. He set it again against the Seattle Kraken when he dropped the gloves with Jared McCann. And it’s not the first time he does this, despite him being smaller than the majority of the league’s players.

“According to hockeyfights.com, the Vancouver Canucks right-winger has fought 14 times at the NHL level, including twice this season. He has never picked his spots in any bout, because at 5-foot-8 and 165 pounds, he won’t measure up statistically and often punches way above his stature.”-Kuzma

The fight against McCann definitely worked, as Linus Karlsson scored moments late to tie the game up at 1. Garland learned through former head coach Rick Tocchet, that at his size he needs to earn his keep everyday. It’s harder for a smaller player to stay consistent, and he can’t get comfortable.

“Despite a glut of wingers vying for roster positions, he just played and seized every day. It wasn’t easy. He buckled down, and his 20-goal campaign helped drive the Canucks to a Pacific Division title and within a victory of the Western Conference final. And Tocchet deserved stick-taps for the support.”-Kuzma

The Canucks are in need of a leader, if they are going for a rebuild or a retool, they need to keep a leader on build to create a culture for them. Winning culture is necessary, teams have often overlooked that, and it has cost them a lot of heartbreak. Garland is the perfect man to lead the charge.
