Anna Segedi and Mellissa Channell-Watkins on PWHL game at LCA

Anna Segedi, left, and Mellissa Channell-Watkins will play for Vancouver in Saturday’s PWHL game at LCA.

In their last game of 2025, the Grand Rapids Griffins extended their point streak to 16 games, but fell in overtime to the Milwaukee Admirals, 3-2, on Wednesday at Van Andel Arena.

John Leonard, who was returned to Grand Rapids on Tuesday night by the Detroit Red Wings, scored his team-leading 20th goal of the season, Michael Brandsegg-Nygard extended his point streak to five games with an assist and Sebastia Cossa stopped 21-of-24 shots.

The Griffins’ 26-3-1 start and 54 points through 29 games remained the best in the AHL’s 90-year history.

Grand Rapids sold out its third-straight New Year’s Eve game in front of 10,834.

Wednesday hockey

(At) Washington 6, N.Y. Rangers 3: Tom Wilson had two goals and an assist to lead Washington past New York.

Wilson, who earlier in the day was named a member of Canada’s Olympic roster, got into a fight with Sam Carrick in the second period for at least his second Gordie Howe hat trick – a goal, an assist and a fight – since March 3, 2025.

Adam Fox, making his return from long-term injured reserve, had a goal and an assist for the Rangers, who have lost three straight.

Nashville 4, (at) Vegas 2: Steven Stamkos scored his 600th career goal and Nashville beat the Vegas.

The win put the Predators (18-17-4) above .500 for the first time since Oct. 16, just five games into the season, when they were 2-1-2.

Vegas, meanwhile, lost for the sixth time in seven games. The Knights closed their four-game homestand with a 1-2-1 mark.

Tampa Bay 4, (at) Anaheim 3 (OT): Darren Raddysh scored midway through overtime, and Tampa Bay blew three one-goal leads before beating Anaheim for its fifth consecutive victory.

Tampa Bay head coach Jon Cooper celebrated his 1,000th regular-season game in charge with his 595th victory as the longest-tenured bench boss in the NHL.

Mason McTavish tied it on a power play with 6:58 left in regulation for the Ducks, who have lost four straight and eight of 10.

(At) San Jose 4, Minnesota 3 (SO): Macklin Celebrini had a goal and an assist hours after being selected to play for Team Canada at the 2026 Winter Olympics, and San Jose beat Minnesota in a shootout.

Celebrini and William Eklund scored for the Sharks in the tiebreaker, while Minnesota failed to convert on either of its two attempts. San Jose has won three straight following a three-game slide.

Igor Chernyshov had a goal and two assists, and Jeff Skinner also scored for the Sharks. Sweden beats US 6-3 in world junior hockey group finale. Canada tops Finland 7-4

St. Paul, Minn. – Lucas Pettersson and Red Wings draft pick Eddie Genborg each scored twice and Sweden beat the United States 6-3 on Wednesday night in the world junior hockey championship to complete group play unbeaten.

“We knew it would be hard game,” Swedish forward Milton Gastrin said. “They were better at the start, but we kept it together and took over a bit in the second and scored some goals. We played like a team the whole way, and I think we did that better than they did, which is probably why we won.”

In the quarterfinals Friday, Sweden will face Latvia, and the second-place Americans will play Finland, a 7-4 loser to Canada later Wednesday night in the Group B finale in Minneapolis. Canada will play Slovakia, and Czechia will meet Switzerland.

Chase Reid, Will Zellers and Teddy Stiga scored for the United States. Brady Knowling stopped 23 shots in his tournament debut before giving way to Nick Kempf. The Americans lost for the first time in four games in the tournament.

“They’re a pretty good team and we didn’t play our best,” Reid said. “We’ll see them again, and we’ll get them back. I feel like we can play the same way, but we didn’t bring our best game tonight. We took a lot of undisciplined penalties that we didn’t need to take, but it’s a learning lesson and we’ll come back stronger.”

In the late game at the University of Minnesota, Cole Beaudoin had two goals and an assist for Canada. Brady Martin also scored twice, and Zayne Parekh had a goal and two assists. The 19-year-old Parekh has appeared in 12 games for the Calgary Flames.

Earlier, Switzerland beat Slovakia 3-2 to finish third in Group A, and Chechia topped Latvia 4-2 in Group B for its third straight win since an opening loss to Canada.
