During the game against the Carolina Hurricanes, journalist Elliotte Friedman delivered an interesting message, seemingly on behalf of the Canadiens’ management.

Things are getting heated within the Montreal Canadiens organization-and not just on the ice.

Elliotte Friedman summed up the atmosphere in one sentence:

“Canadiens clearly unhappy with how this played out”

When it comes from a well-connected guy like him, you know the discomfort is real among the Montreal Canadiens’ executives.

Marchand was penalized on the play, but the league did not add any further discipline. As a result, the message did not go over well with management, especially when it involves a veteran already linked to several disciplinary decisions over the course of his career.

Kent Hughes and the Montreal Canadiens are not in a good mood

The announcement was made before the game, and Adam Engstrom took his place in the lineup in the meantime.

Matheson is the most heavily used defenseman on the Canadiens when healthy, and his absence came at the worst possible time, right in the middle of a road trip.

The Canadiens cannot afford to keep losing key pieces, especially with a tight schedule and games piling up quickly. In short, it’s the kind of combo that adds fuel to the fire. It’s a decision that hasn’t gone over well, with an important player missing from the lineup and a general manager forced to steady the course.
