Philadelphia Flyers’ rookie Denver Barkey scored his first career NHL goal on Saturday during the first period of the game against the Edmonton Oilers at Rogers Place.

Barkey’s goal put the Flyers up 1-0, scoring 7:16 into Saturday’s game.

It was a phenomenal play, started by the rookie deep in the Flyers’ defensive zone. Barkey made a great play to initiate the zone exit from behind the goal line. He then made a clean pass to Sean Couturier and surged up the ice. That put him in that prime position for the Owen Tippett pass to bury his first NHL goal.

That was a play that showed his high hockey IQ and his readiness to be in the league. The goal came in the rookie’s 7th career NHL game.

It had felt like the former London Knight (OHL) would get his first NHL goal sooner, rather than later. He has constantly found himself in the right places on the ice and has done everything the right way in his young NHL career.

Barkey, 20, now has three points in the NHL.

The Newmarket, Ontario native began his professional career with the Lehigh Valley Phantoms this season, where he scored 7 goals and 16 points in 26 games.
