The Pittsburgh Penguins are never a boring crew, as Evgeni Malkin spilled the beans on his injury, and coaches and management are huddling to decide Harrison Brunicke’s immediate future. Elsewhere in the Daily, the New Jersey Devils are in deep, DEEP trouble as fans are calling for everyone’s job after their struggles hit a new low when the New York Islanders destroyed them 9-0 Tuesday night. Trevor Zegras took a good poke at the Anaheim Ducks and fans, and the roster comparisons have begun for an eventual grudge match between Team USA and Team Canada at the Olympics.
Oh, and the NHL trade rumors are split on Kiefer Sherwood, with reporters reporting that the Vancouver Canucks have made a healthy contract offer to the forward, and internet rumor mavens are reporting a trade is close.
The odds favor that Sherwood will reject the offer, and a trade will happen, followed by, see, our report was right! Do you see how the game is played?
Anyway, here’s the latest No Pucks Given podcast that dropped this week. Set your downloads and likes, please and thanks!
Pittsburgh Penguins
Pittsburgh Hockey Now: Brunicke was en route to Pittsburgh Tuesday. Here’s the update on his status and projecting what is likely to happen for the Penguins’ prospect defenseman.
Evgeni Malkin was zipping around the recovery-day practice. It was well attended, but coaches kept many of the players who play big minutes off the ice. Afterward, Malkin divulged the nature and scary moments of his injury. We’ve got the video, too, as Malkin held court in the Penguins locker room.
Steelers Now: How dare a team fire a coach after 18 years! Despite a case of horribly bad luck Sunday night that cost the Baltimore Ravens the game and the AFC North, the Ravens fired coach John Harbaugh, and Harbaugh opened up about his departure from the Steelers’ rival.
No, the Steelers did not deserve that one. I also think Aaron Rodgers would do well to claim the audio in his helmet isn’t working next week, too.
NHL Trade Talk, News, & National Hockey Now
Canucks Army: Multiple credible reports indicate Vancouver is trying to sign Sherwood before instead of considering trade offers. Of course, if the offers are rejected, a trade would be inevitable, but reports indicate Vancouver has made a “medium-term” offer for around $4 million per.
New Jersey Hockey Now: It was a flash point that had fans ready to toss jerseys and calling for a clean sweep of the organization. The New York Islanders absolutely drilled the increasingly lifeless and struggling New Jersey Devils, 9-0.
James Nichols has been inching toward the inevitable, but now all pressure is on general manager Tom Fitzgerald. Pressure. Heat. Something has to give because this cannot continue. It’s the Devils’ crossroads.
Sportsnet: Let’s talk Team USA vs. Team Canada. I think Canada has a real edge, but several players like T.J. Miller really elevated their games in the Four Nations. Here’s an early breakdown of how the teams compare.
Maybe if Team Canada wore Penguins jerseys, Brock Nelson would score 10?
TSN: A very scary moment Tuesday as VGK forward Keegan Kolesar tangled with Winnipeg Jets d-man Hayden Fleury, who crashed full speed into the boards. He was stretchered off and has a broken nose. He was taken to the hospital and admitted overnight.
Vegas Hockey Now: The Jets not only suffered the loss of Fleury, but things are getting bad for Winnipeg, which has now lost 10 in a row after the Vegas Golden Knights rallied for a win.
Detroit Hockey Now: I think this story may interest Penguins fans, as Nate Danielson was widely thought to be on the Penguins’ short list, but they selected Brayden Yeager with the 14th pick in the 2023 draft after Detroit snagged Danielson at No. 9. Yeager is in the AHL this season, and Danielson was just demoted to the AHL on Tuesday after 28 NHL games. It’s a tough path for prospects, and here’s a good look at Danielson’s struggle with the Detroit Red Wings.
Sportsnet: And Trevor Zegras took a good poke at the Anaheim Ducks, who the Flyers defeated Tuesday, and the fans in a postgame interview.
