An NHL game was brought to an abrupt halt on Tuesday night after Winnipeg Jets star Haydn Fleury suffered a terrifying head injury and was stretchered off the ice.

The incident occurred during the first period of the Jets’ game against the Vegas Golden Knights, after Fleury collided with opposition forward Keegan Kolesar.

TSN’s broadcast cameras caught the moment when Fleury was checked in the chest by the Golden Knights man and was sent flying across the ice and into the boards.

The footage showed Fleury smashing into the boards head-first, before rolling around in agony on the ice as medical staff rushed to his attention.

Fleury’s Jets teammates quickly gathered round him as the medical team loaded him onto a stretcher, before eventually taking him off the ice.

Reports, which later emerged, claimed that Fleury had been transported to hospital via an ambulance after the terrifying injury occurred.

The report claimed that Fleury was ‘fully alert’ and ‘moving his extremities’ when the ambulance departed the Canada Life Centre in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

Immediately after the restart in the game, Golden Knights star Kolesar began fighting Jets captain Adam Lowry, as a result of the brutal injury suffered by Fleury.

In the fight, Lowry landed a huge left-hook which sent Kolesar crashing to the ice, before officials quickly intervened and broke it up.

Once they had been both sent to the penalty box, it appeared there was no bad blood between the two stars as they talked it out amicably.

However, that didn’t prevent fans from ripping into Kolesar on social media.

In reaction to a clip of Fleury’s injury, one fan wrote on X: ‘God damn that’s a career ender. That’s terrible. Prayers up to him and his family’.

‘Kolesar should be fined and suspended without pay until Fleury comes back to the lineup,’ another frustrated fan said.

One fan chimed in: ‘Just awful. No matter the team, I hate seeing a player leaving the ice on a stretcher. I hope he’s going to be ok.’

In the end, the Golden Knights won 4-3 after a dramatic encounter which was eventually settled in overtime.
