According to David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period, Winnipeg Jets defenseman Luke Schenn is open to a trade as the Maple Leafs could be an interested team due to their injury woes.
They have a few names who could entice teams such as Nino Neiderreiter and Vladislav Namestikov, but could also part with veterans like Gustav Nyquist or Tanner Pearson as well.
Luke Schenn open to a trade if things get worse
Though there’s one name who has kind of fallen out with Jets head coach x and he makes perfect sense as a trade candidate; and it looks like he’s just as eager to make it happen.
The interesting thing is that we’re starting to hear about Luke Schenn, who just played his 1,100th game with the Jets last night.
I don’t know if that’ll be his last with the Jets, but I don’t know how much more runway there is if things continue status quo.
There is some word that Luke Schenn wouldn’t mind a change of scenery. He would be open to a move.
I don’t know if that relates to how the team is performing, and he’s been scratched a few times.
I’m sure it all correlates. But the latest that we’ve got on Luke Schenn is he hasn’t asked for a trade, but he is open to a change of scenery. And that’s something that the Jets are monitoring now.
It’s interesting that while Schenn hasn’t outright asked for a trade but is also well aware of the fact that he may not have much time left and wants to play for a contender before retirement.
Schenn, 36, comes with a $2.75 million cap hit and has been doing his usual defensive work even if he hasn’t played every game.
In 28 games he has five points (1 goals, 4 assists), 30 blocks, and 80 hits but has a minus-five rating.
So if he’s willing to entertain a move, then he sure has one team who could use him and one he’s intimately familiar with.
Third time’s the charm with Luke Schenn and the Maple Leafs
The Toronto Maple Leafs currently have Chris Tanev out for the long-term with surgery looming, Jake McCabe and Brandon Carlo both come with injury issues and their depth like Dakota Mermis and Philippe Myers are either also hurting or struggling to be an everyday player.
Bringing in Schenn would give them a no-nonsense shutdown defender with one role which is to be a physical force in his own end; Block shots, frustrate opponents and be big.
It would be the third time he joined the team as well; something almost unheard of in modern sports. He was drafted fifth overall by the Maple Leafs in 2008 and spent four seasons with the team before being shipped to Philadelphia.
He wouldn’t be a flashy name but would bring stability to the Maple Leafs blueline and right now that’s something both he and his old team need right now.
