Laurent Brossoit and Nolan Allan were key pieces in Chicago’s package. A future fourth-round pick headlined the return for the Blackhawks.
On Jan. 8 at approximately 2:15 p.m. CT, multiple NHL insiders reported a long-awaited deal for Chicago Blackhawks goaltender Laurent Broissoit was nearing completion. Moments later the full trade package was released. Chicago let go of Broissoit, defenseman Nolan Allan, and a 2028 7th-round pick. In return from the San Jose Sharks, the Blackhawks acquired defenseman Ryan Ellis, defenseman prospect Jake Furlong, and a 2028 4th-round selection.
Chicago’s Perspective
Few people will ever remember that Laurent Broissoit was a Chicago Blackhawk. After signing in July of 2024, Broissoit never suited up for Chicago. A lingering groin injury, among other factors, left Brossoit out of Chicago’s rotation completely.
Nolan Allan was also sent away as part of the trade. Allan was a former first-round pick for Chicago, 32nd overall in 2021. The pick never panned out for either side, however. Allan’s production took a steep decline after his draft year, going from 41 points to 16 in one season. With the Chicago Blackhawks, Nolan Allan amassed 43 games and had eight points (one goal, seven assists).
In return, Chicago is receiving the contract of defenseman Ryan Ellis and prospect Jake Furlong. Furlong, currently a member of the San Jose Barracuda, formerly captained the Halifax Mooseheads of the QMJHL. Furlong was a 5th-round pick in 2022 and likely will be an AHL mainstay. He currently has two assists in 12 games in the second tier.
The Blackhawks sought to dump off some dead weight in this trade, and with the acquisition of Ryan Ellis’ contract, more Blackhawks could be on the move.

San Jose’s Perspective:
This is a low risk, high reward move. Will Grier doesn’t have much to lose in this trade. At worst, you’re getting a veteran backup and a new AHL piece. At best, you can revive a former first-rounder’s career. Allan will most likely start in the AHL and have to work his way back up. Good news for him, San Jose’s future defensive core is weak, very weak. If Allan can prove himself, he could be able to carve a spot in the Sharks’ future roster.
