A big announcement has been made this week regarding the Vancouver Canucks and the National Hockey League’s trade market, with 56 days to go until the deadline.
As the calendar flipped to 2026, we’re entering one of the busiest periods of the year for the National Hockey League as the trade deadline is less than two months away.
“According to several sources, the Vancouver Canucks have let it be known that – in an effort to get younger – they are willing to listen to offers on ‘veteran players.'” Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman said in late November.

“After scoring a career-best 19 goals last season, Sherwood is on pace to surpass 30 in 2025-26 thanks to a torrid start. He’s an excellent skater for a big man, which makes him well-suited to disrupt opponents on the forecheck. Sherwood’s work ethic is a major asset, too. There has been plenty of interest shown in him since the Canucks formally indicated a willingness to listen on their veterans – enough so that the team can probably get a strong return even if an extension for the pending unrestricted free agent isn’t part of the deal. His bargain basement cap hit should help juice the return, too.” Johnston said about Sherwood.
Joining Kiefer Sherwood on Chris Johnston’s trade bait list is Jake DeBrusk, who comes in at 15th, Evander Kane, who’s 28th and German forward Lukas Reichel, who is 29th.
“A perennial 20-goal scorer, Kane has been snake bitten since a move to his hometown Canucks. Now he’s one of the veteran pending free agents Vancouver is soliciting offers on. A physically intimidating presence who is unafraid of going into the hard areas of the ice, Kane should draw some interest from playoff-bound teams willing to look past some of the baggage he comes with. He played in the last two Stanley Cup Finals with the Edmonton Oilers before the summer trade to Vancouver.” Johnston said about Evander Kane on the trade market.
It’s shaping up to be a very busy trade deadline for Vancouver Canucks General Manager Patrik Allvin, one that will dictate how the team proceeds amid their plans for what they call a “hybrid retool”.
