For two periods, the Philadelphia Flyers managed to keep the game relatively close, at least to the point where scoring the next goal would make things interesting. Instead, things unraveled in the third period.
Nikita Kucherov had a four-point game as the Flyers allowed four third-period goals in a 7-2 loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning on Saturday night at Xfinity Mobile Arena.
It took the Lightning just 1:49 to get on the board. Kucherov was left all alone in front, and buried his 21st goal of the season to extend his points streak to nine games.
The Flyers answered back at 4:15. Noah Juulsen‘s point shot was deflected by Garnet Hathaway for his first goal of the season to even things at one.
The Lightning got the lead right back at 6:05. Kucherov scored again for his second goal of the game to make it 2-1.
Through 20 minutes, shots were 8-7 Flyers.
The Lightning got the only goal of the second period at 13:37. After a failed clear by Rasmus Ristolainen, Tampa had three chances and finally put it home with Nick Paul getting his fifth goal of the season.
Through two periods, shots were 16-15 Flyers.
Things unraveled for the Flyers in the third. Gage Goncalves and Brandon Hagel scored 1:34 apart to open up a 5-1 lead for the Lightning.
The Flyers got a goal back on the power play from Owen Tippett, but the Lightning continued to pile on with two more goals separated by two minutes. Yanni Gourde scored on a breakaway, then Goncalves added his second of the game to make it 7-2.
Sam Ersson made 16 saves on 23 lshots in the loss. Andrei Vasilevskiy made 18 saves on 20 shots in the win.
In addition to Kucherov’s four-point game, Brayden Point had three assists. Goncalves, Anthony Cirelli, and Charle-Edouard D’Astous had two points each.
The Flyers and Lightning face off again on Monday night at 7 p.m.
