Calgary Flames alumnus Mason Raymond will be among a star-studded group of former NHL players taking part in the Shoresy Classic when it arrives at the Scotiabank Saddledome on Jan. 22.

Raymond is set to suit up for the Flames alumni as they take on Shoresy’s Sudbury Blueberry Bulldogs from the fictional Northern Ontario Senior Hockey Organization, better known to fans of the hit Crave series Shoresy as the NOSHO. The touring exhibition has been drawing big crowds across Canada while raising money for charity.

“This one’s a little different than what we usually do,” Raymond said. “We play a lot of charity games, but this is probably the most fan-based game we’ve had. There’s a lot of excitement around it, and as players we’re excited too.”

Raymond, who typically plays in about five alumni charity games a year, says the Saddledome matchup stands out for its scale, atmosphere and unique opponent, with the Shoresy tour already making stops in cities like Toronto and Vancouver.

“It’s a bigger stage and a different kind of opponent,” he said. “We’re not playing another alumni team like Calgary versus Edmonton. This has its own energy.”

The Flames alumni roster includes Curtis Glencross, Matt Stajan, Jamie Macoun, Theo Fleury, Robyn Regehr, Brent Krahn, Martin Gelinas, Rhett Warrener, Joel Otto, Troy Brouwer, Michael Stone, Mike Commodore and Raymond himself. Flames legends Lanny McDonald, Colin Patterson and Tim Hunter will be behind the bench as coaches.

The Shoresy lineup will feature several cast members from the series, including creator and star Jared Keeso as Shoresy, along with Terry Ryan, Jonathan-Ismael Diaby, Andrew Antsanen, Ryan McDonell, Jon Mirasty, Brandon Nolan, Jordan Nolan, Max Bouffard, Jacob Smith, Keegan Long, Bourke Cazabon and Frederick Roy.

While the game is designed to be entertaining, Raymond says the competitive side still comes out once the puck drops.

“You get out there and your competitive juices start going,” he said. “We love to win. That’s what we were bred to do.”

A portion of the proceeds from the Shoresy Classic will support Ronald McDonald House, the SuperHEROS program, and CP Kids and Families, blending comedy, nostalgia and charity on one of hockey’s biggest local stages.
