Vancouver Canucks President of Hockey Operations Jim Rutherford believes that trading Quinn Hughes to Minnesota has affected Brock Boeser’s on-ice performance.
December 12th is a day that fans of the Vancouver Canucks won’t forget for the rest of their lives as the club traded captain Quinn Hughes to the Minnesota Wild after he informed them that he would not be signing a contract extension with the organization when he became eligible in July.
By trading Quinn Hughes, the Vancouver Canucks were officially sent into a retool, which has now been reclassified as an actual rebuild by President of Hockey Operations Jim Rutherford and General Manager Patrik Allvin.
“We are transitioning into a rebuild here, acquiring younger players through the draft. Obviously, the draft is really important for us. Since Jim and I got [here] three years ago, we’ve definitely always emphasized on getting younger.” Allvin said.
Jim Rutherford believes Quinn Hughes trade has affected Brock Boeser’s on-ice performance
Since trading Quinn Hughes to the Wild, the Vancouver Canucks have a 5-8-2 record and several players on the club have struggled, including forward Brock Boeser, who has no goals and five assists in those 15 games.”He was one of my few teammates that came to my dad’s funeral, and I think that kind of proved everything to me – the person he is and how he was raised by his parents. That meant a lot to me. He just has a good heart, and he cares about people, and he cares about hockey, and that’s just who he is.” Boeser said about Quinn Hughes after the trade.
“I’m sure it has. Yeah, they were very, very good friends and I’m sure that was part of it. You know he’s [Brock] just a terrific person and he can be sensitive sometimes to situations like this. So, I’m sure it has. Yeah, no doubt.” Rutherford said.
While the Canucks might be focused on rebuilding and ensuring they get the highest pick possible in the first round of the 2026 NHL Entry Draft, they also need to find a way to get Brock Boeser going, with the Burnsville, Minnesota native now goalless in his last 21 games entering action on Thursday.
Boeser will look to snap his goalless drought tonight as the Canucks wrap up their six-game road trip with a stop in Columbus where they’ll take on newly-named Head Coach Rick Bowness and the Blue Jackets.
