Vancouver Canucks President of Hockey Operations Jim Rutherford has revealed plans for his future with the organization as the club gets set to undergo a rebuild.

The Vancouver Canucks are making a lot of noise off the ice these days whether it be due to trade rumors involving several of their players or their plans for hybrid retool that have now turned into a full-on rebuild.

With eight consecutive losses as of Thursday morning, fans are hoping for change and want it quickly, with reports indicating that the club is fielding offers on most of their players in the lead up to the NHL’s trade deadline on Friday, March 6th and forward Kiefer Sherwood appears to be the club’s best asset at the moment, with Patrik Allvin & Jim Rutherford seeking a first round pick for him.

Once the trade deadline passes, attention will turn to the future of those off the ice, including the aforementioned Patrik Allvin & Jim Rutherford, to see whether or not those at the top of the organization believe in them enough to see this rebuild through until the end.

Rutherford went on to add that after the 2026-27 campaign, he’ll consider his options and decide what’s best for himself, his family and the Vancouver Canucks organization, but stressed that he is committed to the rebuild, something fans have been calling for for years.

“As we speak, yes I am. But beyond that, he said he didn’t know.” Rutherford said.

He added, “Eventually I will have to do what’s best for my family but also what’s best for the Canucks. I’m committed to this rebuild. I’m committed to this job today and as long as I’m here.”

Rutherford, a 2019 Hockey Hall of Fame inductee, is set to turn 77 on February 17th, so realistically, his time with the Vancouver Canucks could come to a close at the end of next season, which if that happens, could also lead to some other big off-ice changes throughout the organization.

The next six months are going to be crucial for this rebuild to be successful as Allvin and Rutherford need to ensure they’re getting assets back at the deadline that’ll make an impact on their NHL roster down the line and at June’s draft, where they currently have two first round picks, need to make smart decisions, pick the best player available and not overthink things.
