The Philadelphia Flyers won a game last night, snapping their 6-game winless streak, against an improbable team, might I add.
What made the Flyers’ latest win even more shocking was how they won the game, not necessarily the fact that they won. More with the Flyers, an NHL expert expressed his concern about the team, and could the perfect 1C for the team have been made available?
Around the league, we have the goalie fight and both sides of the postgame. We even have more NHL trade rumors surrounding one Rangers’ star and much more!
Get it all on the 1/20 edition of the PhHN Daily.
Philadelphia Flyers
Philly Hockey Now: The Philadelphia Flyers bounced back in a big way, snapping their losing streak, and beating the Golden Knights 2-1 in Las Vegas to kick off their trip out west.
Vegas seemed like an unlikely place for the Flyers to end the skid, yet here we are. Even more, after allowing more than five goals in their previous five games, holding the Golden Knights to just a single score felt even more unlikely. It was a fantastic defensive game, and an even better one from the goalie.
On Sunday, NHL Draft/Prospect expert Scott Wheeler expressed his concern about the Flyers’ rebuild. He believes that they are farther away than they may seem. So, we looked at his specific comments.
But, if the Flyers are as far away as Wheeler expressed, there is one way to change that: add a young 1C to the organization. 1Cs don’t come around often, and when available, a bidding war ensues. But one might just be available, so let’s analyze Robert Thomas’ fit in Philly.
NHL rumors & news
We had a goalie fight in last night’s Sharks vs. Panthers game!
San Jose Hockey Now: Postgame, Alex Nedeljkovic shared his insight into the fight and what pushed him to do so.
Florida Hockey Now: Now, hear from Sergei Bobrovsky for his side of the epic goalie bout.
San Jose Hockey Now: Ok, back to San Jose. They made a relatively shocking move, dealing for Kiefer Sherwood from the Vancouver Canucks. So, the San Jose Sharks are buyers; that’s a weird thought. But the early reports on Sherwood are positive, and NHL scouts love him.
Forever Blueshirts: The New York Rangers are retooling, not selling. Alexis Lafreniere could generate a good bit of interest, and his lack of trade protection may make him a very movable piece. But Jim Cerny writes why the Rangers may prefer to keep Lafreniere, not trade him.
The Athletic ($): So, speaking of Rangers trade rumors, one player that is almost certain to be dealt is Artemi Panarin. Teams will come lining up for a chance to trade for the star winger, and he’ll be valuable to any team’s playoff pursuit. The Athletic staff looks at 10 potential landing spots for Panarin.
TSN: And finally, the home team roster for the 2026 Milano Cortina Winter Olympics has been released. Italy chose not to fill the roster with NHL descendants; rather, they went with the actual hometown kids. There are no NHL players on the Italian roster.
