The Toronto Maple Leafs will be one of the most talked-about teams heading into the upcoming offseason. After another early playoff exit, many around the league are expecting the Maple Leafs to make some big changes across the organization.

Most of these changes will likely come from the roster, with multiple key players entering free agency. But there could also be some moves made in the front office as well.

According to Sportsnet, the New York Islanders have been granted permission to speak with Maple Leafs president Brendan Shanahan. New York has an opening in the front office and is looking to potentially fill it with Shanahan.

The Islanders are undergoing some change themselves this offseason, and bringing in a veteran like Shanahan could be a solid move. New York won the 2025 NHL draft lottery and will now be in a position to land a game-changing type of player.

This news of the Islanders’ interest comes after Shanahan was scheduled to meet with the Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment board of directors this week. This is part of the end-of-the-year review, and his future could be determined here.

Shanahan was hired by the Maple Leafs in 2014 and has helped guide the organization over the years. The veteran executive has overseen nine straight playoff appearances, which is the longest active streak in the NHL today.

While Shanahan isn’t fully to blame for the shortcomings on the ice, the Maple Leafs may benefit from a change like this. The team could use a new voice in the front office, potentially helping them to finally get over the hump next season.
