New York Rangers coach challenge and Alex Lafreniere’s goal drama flipped the Los Angeles Kings game on Tuesday, and the NHL has just made an official announcement.
The NHL issued an official explanation for Mike Sullivan’s Coach’s Challenge at 10:06 of the third period, a moment that briefly kept the Kings from stretching the lead to 5-3. The challenge overturned Alex Laferriere’s goal for goaltender interference.
In real time, it felt like the Rangers grabbed a lifeline, because taking a 5-3 deficit that late usually ends the night. Instead, the goal came off the board and the building had to reset.
New York Rangers take 4-3 loss to the Los Angeles Kings
Regardless of the challenge, the Kings still beat the Rangers 4-3, and that’s the maddening theme of this stretch, even when the Rangers win a ruling, they still fail to execute.
The Rangers needed cleaner exits in the final minutes and more possession below the tops of the circles.
The challenge itself was textbook league language, «conclusive and irrefutable» evidence is required to overturn the call on the ice. However, the details still matter, even in a messy season the New York Rangers were one bounce away from forcing overtime, but the Kings found the extra goal and held on.
Rangers fans can argue the bigger issues all night, but Tuesday’s sequence was simple, the league agreed with Sullivan, then the Rangers still ran out of runway.
