An NHL prospect from Mission was traded to the Calgary Flames organization earlier this week.

Mission defenceman Abram Wiebe was dealt to the Flames as part of a trade that sent Rasmus Andersson to the Vegas Golden Knights on Sunday (Jan. 18).

Calgary also acquired Zach Whitecloud, a 2027 first round pick and a conditional 2028 second round pick from Vegas in the trade. The second round pick will become a first if Vegas wins the 2026 Stanley Cup.

Wiebe is currently his third season with the University of North Dakota Fighting Hawks in the NCAA. The 22-year-old was selected 209th overall by Vegas in the seventh round of the 2022 NHL Draft.

Calgary general manager Craig Conroy praised Wiebe’s size, movement, and leadership with his college squad.

“He’s a big guy — well rounded,” Conroy said in an interview with FlamesTV.

He added later: “Simple, direct and hard — that’s what we really liked about him. To be able to bring in another North Dakota guy now — it’s nice to have another prospect in here. Especially a left-shot guy that we feel moving forward in the organization we’ll be looking for.”

Wiebe has tallied 14 points so far in North Dakota’s 2025-26 campaign with three goals and 11 assists.

The 6’3, 209-lb defenceman has played 102 games in his collegiate career, notching eight goals and 40 assists during that stretch.

Prior to playing in North Dakota, Wiebe spent four seasons with the BCHL’s Chilliwack Chiefs.

He earned BCHL Top Defenceman honours and was named a BCHL First Team All-Star with Chilliwack in 2022-23.
