The Senators have announced unfortunate injury news regarding David Perron.

The Ottawa Senators entered the 2025-26 NHL season with the intention of building on their success of the previous campaign which saw them return to the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the first time since the spring of 2017.

Instead, they’ve largely struggled with inconsistency and injury concerns and are currently tied for last place in the Atlantic Division.

Not only have they had to play for long stretches of time without team captain Brady Tkachuk (injury) and starting goaltender Linus Ullmark (personal leave of absence), but now they’re going to be without one of their most important veteran leaders.

The Senators announced that forward David Perron, who is playing in his second season with the franchise, will be unavailable for the next five to seven weeks after undergoing sports hernia surgery.

The news was announced earlier on Thursday by Senators coach Travis Green, who noted that he’d been going through the ailment for quite some time before ultimately deciding to have it surgically repaired.

“It’s been nagging for a while,” Green said. “So he went and got it checked out yesterday and decided that was the best option for him.”

Perron, 37, has skated in 49 games for the Senators this season and has collected 10 goals with 15 assists. He’s also a plus-two while having amassed 22 penalty minutes.

The Ottawa Senators Have Dealt With Multiple Notable Absences This Season

The Senators were thrust behind the eight-ball almost immediately from the get-go this season, as team captain Brady Tkachuk missed several weeks after being cross-checked by Nashville Predators defenseman Roman Josi in October, requiring surgery.

He missed 20 total games over a period of six weeks, and would later explain that he was grateful for the opportunity to be back on the ice with his teammates shortly before returning to game action.

“I’m very thankful and very grateful for the people that helped me get back,” Tkachuk said after returning. “I’m thankful to be able to play the game I love again. It was a long six weeks, there were some tough stretches, there were some highs and some lows, and I’m just grateful to have the opportunity to be playing again and I’m really excited to be able to join the boys.”

Additionally, the Senators have been without goaltender Linus Ullmark for the past several weeks after he decided to take a personal leave of absence from the club.

David Perron Is Skating In His Second Season With The Senators

Perron is noted for his veteran leadership skills, and his absence isn’t going to be easy for the Senators, who are trying to fight their way back into the thick of the tightly-packed Eastern Conference playoff chase.

Perron has played for multiple franchises during his NHL career, and he’s perhaps best known for his multiple tenures as a member of the St. Louis Blues, with whom he won the Stanley Cup after defeating the Boston Bruins in seven games during the 2019 Stanley Cup Final.

Perron has also skated with the Edmonton Oilers, Pittsburgh Penguins, Detroit Red Wings, Anaheim Ducks, and Vegas Golden Knights.
