The Detroit Red Wings sorely missed the second half of their top pair last night in their 4-3 loss to the Minnesota Wild. Simon Edvinsson was a late scratch from the matchup after tweaking an injury during warmups pre-game.
Coach Todd McLellan updated reporters postgame, as the team had originally planned to scratch another Swedish defenseman on the night. Said McLellan, “He was questionable leaving Toronto last night… Having today off, tomorrow off will certainly help.”
Bad Timing
The good news is that according to the coach Edvinsson was walking around postgame, which points to the injury not being long term. Axel Sandin-Pellikka, was originally planned to be scratched. However, the young swede manned the second pair with Travis Hamonic for his 52nd straight game, the longest in his young career. Ben Chiarot and Jacob Bernard-Docker played much of the night opposite Seider on the top blue line.
Edvinsson was recently named as someone to watch as an Olympic replacement for an injury ravaged Swedish defense squad, as Oliver Eckman-Larsson’s recently exited the Red Wings and Maple Leafs’ contest with his status still unknown.
Hopefully for Edvinsson the injury does not linger, or hurt his prospective chances at making the Olympic roster after initially being snubbed.
