WINONA, Minnesota (WXOW) – The Minnesota Wild have filmed a documentary highlighting the small town of Winona and its passion for hockey.

Despite not being a traditional hockey powerhouse, Winona embraces the sport with pride.

“We still have really passionate people in Winona that love hockey, love the game of hockey and want to pass it on to others, and particularly their kids,” said Alex Tipton, president of the Winona Area Youth Hockey Association.

The Minnesota Wild, through initiatives like the Skate It Forward program, are making it easier for kids in Winona to get into hockey.

“The Skate It Forward program… is aimed at allowing the first year of youth hockey to be free for those kids that choose to play in the first year,” Tipton said.

Winona is one of 11 towns selected to pilot this initiative to grow hockey across Minnesota.

“We’re hoping that that’ll be a huge jump start, a big nest egg that can make this possible for the growth of community hockey in Minnesota so that we can preserve, protect and grow the game that we love,” said JJ Pettit, board liaison to the Minnesota Wild.

The program’s success has sparked interest in the sport among local youth.

“I actually have a friend who wants to be in the skating program,” said Canan, a Winona youth hockey player.

The documentary, titled “The Making of a Hockey Town,” captures the genuine love for the game in Winona.

“Without all the hockey history like some other communities have, they saw… the love of the game in its purest form,” said Tipton.

The film showcases the community’s dedication to hockey, from adults to kids.

“A lot of us put a lot of effort, and time, and tears, and smiles into, that buzz was real and tangible,” Pettit said.

Winona’s community members, including young players, express their love for the sport.

“It’s, like, a small town. But, like, there’s, like, hockey all around,” said Adler, a Winona youth hockey player.

“I love skating out… on the lakes. And I like skating out over where Sugar Loaf is,” said Jonathan, another young player.

As the love for hockey grows in Winona, Pettit hopes it inspires future players.

“Hopefully at least one kid just says yes to hockey,” Pettit said.

The documentary is set to premiere on Saturday, January 24, on Fan Dual Network after the Minnesota Wild’s game. The documentary will be available on Youtube on the following day.
