It was a big night for Owen Tippett, who earned the hat trick and a four-point night, leading the Philadelphia Flyers (24-17-9) to a 7-3 win vs. the Colorado Avalanche (35-6-9) on Friday night at Ball Arena in Denver. It was just the Avalanche’s sixth regulation loss of the season.

Sam Ersson was phenomenal in goal for the Flyers, stopping 32 of 35 shots.

Owen Tippett, Denver Barkey, Bobby Brink, and Matvei Michkov scored for the Flyers. Parker Kelly, Victor Oloffson, and Cale Makar scored for the Avalanche.

While the Avalanche started the game strong, it was Sam Ersson who built momentum for the Flyers. The Avalanche tied the game heading into the second intermission, but it was all Flyers from there.

Here is how we got to the final score.

Ersson starts perfect for the Flyers

The Flyers and Sam Ersson, who made his third straight start (I’m calling it four since he played most of the Ranger game as well), were tested early on. An early Travis Konecny hooking penalty put Philadelphia on the penalty kill.

The Flyers were able to kill it off relatively easily. They were tested again four minutes later after a Noah Cates interference penalty, but again, no harm, no foul. Sam Ersson got off to a fantastic start.

The first period looked like a slaughter. Colorado was showering with Ersson with shots, outshooting the Flyers 14-1. However, on their second shot, the Flyers took the lead. With 4:58 to go in the first frame, Owen Tippett (16) sent a snipe past Mackenzie Blackwood, assisted by Denver Barkey (6) and Cam York (17).

The Flyers had a 1-0 lead before getting their first chance on the power play, courtesy of a Nathan MacKinnon cross-check.

Over a minute in, it was Denver in Denver. Flyers’ rookie Denver Barkey (2) netted the power-play goal, assisted by Matvei Michkov (15) and Owen Tippett (15), giving the Flyers the 2-0 lead heading into the first intermission.

Ersson was spectacular, stopping a career-high 17 shots in period one.

All square after 40 minutes

Ersson started the second period the same way he played the first: excellently. However, he could not remain perfect forever. The Flyers had a chance to extend their lead after Michkov drew a high stick from Artturi Lehkonen, but could not score on the power play.

Instead, the Avalanche got on the board about three minutes later. Parker Kelly (10) put Colorado on the board, assisted by Zahkar Bardakov (8) and Jack Ahcan (2). Quickly, the Flyers’ 2-0 lead shrunk to 2-1.

It took just over 3 minutes for the Avalanche’s top guys to do their thing. Martin Necas (39) found Nathan MacKinnon (48), who drew the focus of the defense, so he dished it to Victor Olofsson (10), who tied the game at 2.

However, just 32 seconds later, Bobby Brink (13) answered the Colorado goal with a goal of his own, giving Philadelphia the 3-2 lead.

However, it was Colorado’s top guys again, with Necas (40) to MacKinnon (49) to Cale Makar (15), who blasted one past the blocker of Sam Ersson, tying the game at three. The two teams scored four goals in less than five minutes, and the game was tied at 3.

That was the score headed into the second intermission.

Tippett completes the hat trick, Flyers pull ahead

The third period started with a bang for the Flyers. Owen Tippett was on the rush with Denver Barkey crashing the net. Instead of dishing the puck, Tippett (17) ripped the shot home, assisted by Sean Couturier (21). The Flyers started the third period with an early 4-3 lead, and it only grew from there.

Just over a minute later, the Flyers did it again. Garnet Hathaway (1) picked up his first assist of the season, feeding Emil Andrae (10), who ripped a shot, which was redirected by Matvei Michkov (11), extending Philadelphia’s lead to 5-2.

The Flyers’ scoring did not stop there. While short-handed, following a Denver Barkey slash, Owen Tippett (18) forced a turnover and took the breakaway and completed the hat trick, scoring his third goal of the night, and extending the Flyers’ lead to 6-3.

Colorado emptied the net with just over five minutes remaining in an attempt to crawl back into the game.

The Flyers had a couple of mishaps with the empty net, but eventually, Matevi Michkov (12) buried the empty-net shot, assisted by Travis Konecny (28). Philadelphia’s lead was extended to 7-3.

That is how the game ended on Friday, as the Flyers scored a season-high 7 goals and beat the league’s best team at their own arena. It was the second time Colorado lost at Ball Arena in regulation all season.

What’s next

The Flyers head home from their road trip when they host the New York Islanders on Monday at Xfinity Mobile Arena. Puck drop is at 7:00 p.m. EST.
