The Toronto Maple Leafs have, once again, failed to win a Game 7.

On Sunday, the Florida Panthers ran the Maple Leafs out of their own building to the tune of a 6-1 blowout. It’s the second 6-1 loss in a row the Maple Leafs have sustained on home ice in this series and Toronto’s 2025 Stanley Cup hopes have officially ended thanks to this defeat.

It’s common knowledge by now that the Maple Leafs have put together a history of playoff misery with their core of Auston Matthews, Mitch Marner, William Nylander and John Tavares at the helm. Since 2018, the Maple Leafs have gone 0-6 in winner-take-all games and have sustained multiple Game 7 blowout losses over the years.

It’s safe to say that Maple Leafs fans have had enough of the disappointment. In the middle of Sunday night’s Game 7, multiple jerseys were thrown onto the ice and beer was reportedly thrown at Toronto’s bench as well.

A fan threw a beer at the Leafs on the bench.

Marner had to sidestep a thrown jersey before skating to the bench on his final shift as he was getting booed.

Fan’s frustrations are understandable given the lack of effort in a Game 7 scenario, but throwing things on the ice or at players during the game is never the right call.

As for where the Maple Leafs go from here, it seems as if the team’s much-maligned Core Four will be broken up this summer. Marner is an upcoming free agent, having opted to not sign a contract extension in Toronto over the past year. Will one of Matthews, Nylander or Tavares get dealt as well after yet another disgusting effort in a series loss? Or will Maple Leafs president Brendan Shanahan get the boot for his role in Toronto’s underperforming seasons?

Only time will tell, it seems, but for now, Maple Leafs fans are once again incredibly disgusted and disheartened by the team’s performance in a win-or-go home game.

I think MLSE needs to have a serious conversation about Shanahan vetoing the Marner trade and the subsequent fallout. The buck stops with him and running it back over multiple seasons has proven to be the wrong choice.
