The Buffalo Sabres continued their dominant run with a 5-0 road win over the New York Islanders on Saturday afternoon at UBS Arena. The victory improved Buffalo to 29-17-5 and marked its 18th win in the past 22 games.
Alex Lyon backstopped the shutout with 26 saves, earning his second shutout of the season and his ninth consecutive victory, tying a franchise record set by Gerry Desjardins during the 1976-77 season. Lyon was sharp early, stopping 13 shots in the first period, and turned aside multiple breakaway chances as the Sabres maintained control.
Jason Zucker led the offense with two goals, scoring early in both the second and third periods. Tage Thompson added a late second-period goal to give Buffalo a two-goal cushion heading into the final frame. Rasmus Dahlin and Alex Tuch closed out the scoring in the third, with Dahlin’s goal coming with the Islanders net empty and Tuch following moments later with a deflection from the slot.
Ryan McLeod and Mattias Samuelsson each recorded two assists as Buffalo spread its offense throughout the lineup.
David Rittich made 16 saves for the Islanders, who were shut out for the first time this season. .
Next, the Sabres visit the Toronto Maple Leafs on Tuesday at 7 p.m., closing out a five-game road trip.
