The Carolina Hurricanes shut down the Ottawa Senators with a dominating performance throughout the first 20 minutes, netting three goals and leaving the Senators with no opportunity to take the lead.

The Canes (32-15-5), even being outshot by the Senators (23-21-7), left the ice with a 4-1 win and extended their conference lead to eight points. Nine different Canes players tallied a point against former teammate and Senator goaltender James Reimer.

Early in the first period, center Seth Jarvis recorded the game-winning goal and doubled the lead for Carolina. Center Sebastian Aho fought for possession of the puck and passed it to defenseman Alexander Nikishin. The Russian used his stick-handling skills to keep the puck in his possession and got the puck to Jarvis, who had time to settle and find the back of the net from right outside the paint.

Three minutes prior, wingers Mark Jankowski and William Carrier had a 2-on-1 opportunity heading into the Senators’ zone. Deceiving the goalie with his eyes, Jankowski passed the puck to Carrier, who easily slipped it past the goal line and put his team on the board.

“They play a smart game,” Carrier said. “They go out there and get hard in the forecheck. [Kotkaniemi] and [Jankowski] have some skills, so when they have a chance to make a play, it’s time to make a play, and when it’s time to play deep, just play deep.”

With two Ottawa players in the box halfway through the second period, Carolina kicked up the intensity and capitalized on the powerplay. With the help of his linemates, winger Andrei Svechnikov took the puck deep in their offensive zone and skated around the net. Sending the puck into the crowded paint and hoping for a lucky bounce, the puck found its way into the net after hitting off the skate of defenseman Tyler Kleven.

“[Nikishin and I] were just speaking about the power play,” Svechnikov said. “We have to calm down a little bit, find each other, look for each other and support each other.”

A little over halfway through the second period, the Canes had a defensive breakdown and left center Tim Stützle unmarked, allowing him to receive a long pass from defenseman Jake Sanderson. Standing near the face-off circle, Stützle let off a swift wrist shot into the netting, putting his team on the board and preventing Bussi from getting his second shutout.

The Hurricanes have a four-day break before they host the Utah Mammoth on Thursday, Jan. 29, with a 7 p.m. puck drop.
