The price to acquire New York Rangers star forward Artemi Panarin is reportedly a heavy one which won’t be good news for the Toronto Maple Leafs.
New York Rangers forward Artemi Panarin, widely expected to be dealt by the Rangers ahead of the NHL’s trade deadline, reportedly has his price set for what the Rangers want in return for the 34-year-old.
A recent report from Elliotte Friedman on the ’32 Thoughts podcast’ that Panarin is looking at a contract that could take him close to, or at the end of his NHL career for 4-5 years at $10-12M.
For this season, new reporting reveals the Rangers goal for what they’re looking to get back in return for Panarin, and a heavy deal is what New York’s goal is believed to be.
The Rangers have been out of contention after injuries to stars Igor Shesterkin and Adam Fox have derailed their season, last in the Eastern Conference with a 21-25-6 record.
Rangers price for Artemi Panarin trade return revealed
The reported price for Artemi Panarin has finally been outlined, and it would be a heavy cost for the Rangers veteran to be acquired, at least for the asking price.
According to Elliotte Friedman, the believed price for Panarin is along the lines of the same cost paid by the Colorado Avalanche to the New York Islanders for Brock Nelson last season.
Nelson was traded to Colorado in exchange for a first and a third round picks, along with top prospect Calum Ritchie. A return for Panarin could be in a similar ballpark.
The Avalanche’s top prospect, Calum Ritchie had appeared in seven games for Colorado last season, while one of the top players in the OHL for the Oshawa Generals.
The Rangers prospect pool will be slightly weakened when top prospect Gabe Perreault graduates to the NHL full-time, splitting time between the NHL and AHL, with holes everywhere in terms of prospect need.
Along with a potential top pick, New York could be in need for any sort of top prospect, along with picks, although a deal for Panarin isn’t guaranteed to mirror Nelson’s with one team linked to Panarin being the Washington Capitals.
For a team like the Toronto Maple Leafs, they don’t have a first round pick until 2028, but likely don’t have the financial space to take on Panarin’s $11.6M contract without retention, making it probable as too rich of a cost.
Not to mention potentially giving up Easton Cowan and maybe more for a player who will cost a lot of money and be nearly 40 when his next reported deal is up.
It’s too rich for the Maple Leafs and while Panarin would be a star addition to the team, there are way too many moving parts and restrictions to make it worth their while.
