The Vancouver Canucks have made a big announcement on Tuesday regarding goaltender Thatcher Demko and his availability for the rest of the 2025-26 season.

With exactly 30 games remaining in the Vancouver Canucks’ schedule, the team is continuing to deal with injury issues to their NHL roster, something that’s been a big problem for the organization since puck dropped on the 2025-26 campaign back in October.

Vancouver Canucks make big announcement regarding star goaltender Thatcher Demko

“Vancouver Canucks General Manager Patrik Allvin announced today that goaltender Thatcher Demko will undergo hip surgery and will not play for the remainder of the 2025.26 season.” the Canucks said.

General Manager Patrik Allvin commented on the news shortly after the announcement saying that after consulting with doctors and medical professionals, this was the best course of action to ensure Demko will be ready to go for training camp in mid-September.

“After consulting with our team doctors and outside specialists, Thatcher Demko will be shut down for the rest of the year. Thatcher will undergo surgery next week for an injury unrelated to the one that kept him out of action last season. Following his rehab, he will be ready for the start of training camp in September.” Allvin said.

With the Vancouver Canucks well out of the playoff race in the Western Conference and declaring their intentions to rebuild earlier this month, it makes it a bit easier to shut down Thatcher Demko for the rest of the season and ride with a tandem of Kevin Lankinen & Nikita Tolopilo.

In 20 games this season, the San Deigo, California native had an 8-10-1 record along with a 2.85 goals against average, an .897 save percentage and one shutout.
