Syracuse, N.Y. — The new No. 1 in this week’s syracuse.com’s Section III boys hockey rankings should feel right at home.

Defending Division I champion West Genesee (12-4-1) has earned the right to look down at the rest of the field. The Wildcats vaulted up from No. 2 after defeating previous No. 1 Rome Free Academy in a showdown Tuesday night.

That contest was a rematch of last year’s sectional final and looks like a preview of this year’s championship clash. But first, the Wildcats are staring at a late-season challenge vs. No. 7 Syracuse (10-5) on Thursday.

Whitesboro (11-5) and Baldwinsville (9-3-3) were the big movers this week, each inching up two spots to No. 3 and 4, respectively. Whitesboro is gearing up for a big test against No. 5 Skaneateles (12-4) on Thursday. The Bees, meanwhile, face off vs. No. 8 New Hartford (9-5-1) on Saturday.
