Another National Hockey League draft pick is headed to UMass Lowell.
The River Hawks have landed a commitment from Dalyn Wakely, a 6-1, 198-pound forward from Port Hope, Ont.
Wakely, a hard-nosed player, is coming off a strong season for the Barrie Colts of the Ontario Hockey League.
In 55 regular season games, he netted 23 goals and 35 assists for 58 points. He upped his production in the playoffs, collecting a 7-17-24 line in 16 games.
He was selected in the sixth round (192nd overall) by the Edmonton Oilers in the 2024 NHL Draft.
Wakely was third on his team in points during the regular season, one off tying for the team lead, and he tied for Barrie’s most playoff points.
He posted big numbers during the 2023-24 season for the North Bay Battalion, an OHL junior team based in North Bay, Ont., posting 39 goals and 104 points in 66 regular season games.
Wakely is the third incoming River Hawk who has been selected by an NHL team.
Left-shot defenseman Tnias Mathurin of Windsor of the OHL has been drafted by the Detroit Red Wings, while right-shot defenseman Nate Misskey of Victoria of the Western Hockey League is a San Jose Sharks draft pick.
Knight a finalist
Boston Fleet captain Hilary Knight has been named one of three Professional Women’s Hockey League MVP finalists.
Knight is up for the league’s top individual award, which is named after PWHL investor Billie Jean King, a women’s sports advocate.
Knight enjoyed a terrific 2024-25 season for the Fleet, leading the team in goals (15) and assists (14). She tied for the league scoring title with 29 points in 30 games. Knight, one of the most decorated women’s hockey players of all-time, only scored 11 points during the regular season last season for Boston in the league’s inaugural campaign.
Knight is a four-time Olympic medalist.
Knight’s competition for the award is Toronto defender Renata Fast and Montreal forward Marie-Philip Poulin. The selection committee voted between the regular season and the beginning of the playoffs.
The winner will be announced June 25.
