The Detroit Red Wings and the St. Louis Blues were linked in a new trade rumor that foresees Steve Yzerman acquiring a top defenseman from Doug Armstrong.
Considering the current needs of the team, as well as the players available and Steve Yzerman’s criteria, the list can be shortened.
Although names on Bultman’s list such as Logan Stanley, Mario Ferraro, or Connor Murphy could’ve been great fits in Detroit, another player set to be available is emerging as the one who could be the perfect addition to the Wings’ blue line.
Max Bultman Links Justin Faulk To The Detroit Red Wings
The St. Louis Blues, who will be among the teams with a lot of interest in the draft lottery this year, are expected to sell a few players for future assets.
According to The Athletic’s reporter, Justin Faulk would be nothing short of “an ideal for the Red Wings’ biggest need,” and could be the missing piece needed in Detroit to “make that blue line look a whole lot more playoff-ready.”
Considering Faulk’s contract and performances, the Blues GM Doug Armstrong is in a position to ask for a significant return.
Indeed, Elliotte Friedman confirmed that they will ask for something similar to what the Calgary Flames got from the Vegas Golden Knights for Rasmus Andersson (Zach Whitecloud, prospect Abram Wiebe, a first-round pick, and a second-round pick that can become a first if the Golden Knights win the Stanley Cup this year.)
Even if the price tag is high, Yzerman would get a great player. This season, the 33-year-old defenseman scored 24 points, including 11 goals, in 52 games with the struggling Blues. He also ranks second on his team for blocked shots, with 94.
He also fits in one of Steve Yzerman’s most important criteria: he has term on his contract, with his $6.5M AAV deal expiring after the 2026-27 season.
