Head coach Sheldon Keefe confirmed on Saturday that the Devils forward is day-to-day with a lower-body injury.
“Evaluation yesterday confirmed good news which is that it’s not anything serious,” Keefe told reporters. “I think we’ll see him on the ice soon.”
Keefe also said that captain Nico Hischier will be a game-time decision because of an illness. Hischier did not participate in the team’s morning skate.
Hughes left Thursday night’s game against the Nashville Predators in the first period after tweaking something in his lower body.
Hughes is slated to compete at the Winter Olympics with his brother Quinn for the first time with Team USA. Competition begins Feb. 11.
The 24-year-old has had a tough season with injuries, missing five weeks after cutting his right thumb at a team dinner, which forced him to have surgery.
In 36 games this season, the Orlando, Fla., native has 12 goals and 36 points.
