At this point, they’re looking like they’ll be trade deadline sellers. But will that selling include Auston Matthews?
That’s the question everyone is asking about the star center who has committed himself long-term to Toronto.
When Matthews was recently asked about this, he said that he leaves the decision-making on this front up to management and just worries about what is happening on the ice.

Now, hockey fans have further insight.
NHL insider Elliotte Friedman, on his 32 Thoughts podcast, shared the latest Matthews news. It sounds like he isn’t going anywhere.

“He made a long-term commitment to Toronto a few years ago, and even with a tough season, he isn’t interested in breaking that commitment,” Friedman said. “I don’t think Auston is going anywhere. I don’t think he has a desire to go anywhere.”

Both aspects to those last two sentences are important.
It seems that Friedman, number one, is recognizing that he isn’t hearing any buzz from his sources about the potential of a Matthews trade.
It also sounds like he’s heard that Matthews is fine with being in Toronto and seeing this through.

The Maple Leafs will surely feel better about a future that includes Matthews, and right now, that sounds like it’s the future they will get.
