The Buffalo Sabres saw their five-game win streak come to an end with a 4-2 loss to the Montreal Canadiens on Saturday night at KeyBank Center.

Buffalo carried a 2-1 lead into the third period, but Montreal’s Cole Caufield scored twice in the final frame to swing the game. It marked just the Sabres’ second loss of the season when leading after two periods, falling to 24-2-0 in that situation.

Alex Lyon started in goal for Buffalo and finished with 27 saves on 30 shots. The setback snapped Lyon’s franchise-record 10-game win streak and was his first loss since Black Friday.

The Sabres opened the scoring in the second period when Owen Power ended a 24-game goal drought, netting his fourth goal of the season. Noah Ostlund added Buffalo’s second goal later in the period to give the Sabres a one-goal cushion heading into intermission.

Montreal responded with a strong push in the third, tying the game early before Caufield struck again to put the Canadiens ahead for good. An empty-net goal sealed the outcome in the final minute.

Despite the loss, Buffalo remains firmly in the playoff picture, sitting two points behind Montreal while holding the first Eastern Conference wild card spot. The two teams split their four-game season series, each winning twice.

Box Score

The Sabres (31-18-5) now head on the road for a two-game swing through Florida. Buffalo will face the Panthers on Monday before visiting the Lightning on Tuesday. Monday’s puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m.
