A decision has been made by the NHL’s Department of Player Safety, a day after Alex Ovechkin’s actions vs. the Detroit Red Wings’ Elmer Soderblom.

After last night’s disappointing 4-3 loss in overtime to the Washington Capitals, the Detroit Red Wings have been dealt another blow.

While Patrick Kane deserved all his pageantry and notoriety for scoring his 1,375th point Thursday, another storyline remains. Alex Ovechkin’s crushing hit on forward Elmer Soderblom.

The action happened after Soderblom passed; he wasn’t in possession of the puck after passing it. He’d turn around, and just as he had, Ovechkin would plow into him with what looked to be a cross-check to his back, on his numbers.

Today it was confirmed; instead of being penalized by the officials that night, he’d escape without any kind of punishment.

Today, the status quo remains.

Washington Capitals Alex Ovechkin’s injustice remains as the Detroit Red Wings receive no relief

The veteran forward laid out the 6-foot-8 depth forward Soderblom in a crushing hit that defied logic. But the circumstances were all borne by the rookie Red Wings player, who had to continue playing without justice from the officials.

The Department of Player Safety and George Parros were no help either, as the NHL failed to utilize an opportunity to hand out discipline to a player who was reckless last night.

The Capitals won the battle last night, but the Red Wings are atop the Eastern Conference while Spencer Carbery’s team remains in the bottom rung.

If there’s any consolation, it’s that.
