The hockey world lost a real one today as former Maple Leafs defenseman Jim Morrison passed away at the age of 94.
Morrison was a motor on the blueline for the Toronto Maple Leafs during the fifties after he broke into the NHL as an undrafted free agent out of Montreal.
Toronto honors a legendary defensive icon
The team shared the news on their X account, sending condolences to his family and his son, Dave, who still works for the club.
We are saddened to hear of the passing of former Maple Leaf Jim Morrison at the age of 94—the second-oldest living Leafs alumnus.
Jim played 7 seasons and 399 regular season games for the Blue and White.
Our condolences to his friends and family, including son Dave Morrison, longtime Leafs scouting and player personnel executive.
He suited up for 399 regular season games in Toronto over seven hard seasons.
The man was a three-time All-star who played a heavy game in an era where you had to hunt for every inch of ice.
He logged 704 total NHL games and even had a second life with the Penguins late in his career.
But his impact was beyond the box score.
Morrison was the first president of the AHL players’ union because players trusted him to lead.
He also won the Eddie Shore Award as the top defender in the AHL during a season he put on a clinic.
It’s a very sad day for the hockey world, but his legacy in Toronto isn’t going anywhere.
