Philadelphia Flyers
Philly Hockey Now: Sean Couturier is taking on a new role with the Philadelphia Flyers. The team’s captain is now centering the fourth line in Philadelphia. After Monday’s practice, Couturier and Rick Tocchet discussed the new role and how he won’t be used like a typical 4th-liner.
Speaking of Monday’s practice, with Couturier’s move to the 4th line, Trevor Zegras has taken over as a top-nine centerman for the Flyers. The offseason addition had been primarily playing on the wing for the Flyers, but spoke about his return to center following Monday’s practice.
At the Flyers Charities Carnival over the weekend, head coach Rick Tocchet had some interesting things to say about Matvei Michkov. The discussion has now reached national media, as Elliotte Friedman discussed the noise on his podcast, 32 Thoughts on Tuesday. Is it time for the “Briere Signal”?
And finally, the Flyers are back in action on Tuesday, hosting the Washington Capitals. Can the Flyers get back on track, or will the skid continue?
NHL rumors & news
TSN: Let’s start with arguably the biggest news in the daily. Nashville Predators general manager Barry Trotz is stepping down from his position as GM and will retire as soon as a successor is named.
Ottawa Citizen: Stop me if you’ve heard this before: An Eastern Conference team, one that is seemingly out of the playoff hunt, is keeping its options open because of how close the East is. Ottawa Senators GM Steve Saios says time is on their side as they wait to make the big decision.
Sportsnet: Another day, another updated trade board. As the NHL trade rumors continue to swirl, Nick Kypreos has released his trade board 3.0 as what could be a mini-deadline before the roster freeze occurs.
Speaking of the freeze, here are some key points.
Just a Reminder:
-Trade Freeze starts at 3 pm ET on Feb 4…to 11:59 pm ET on Feb 22
-Teams can not practice from Feb 6-16
-Teams can have full practices after 2 pm local on Feb 17
-Olympic Tournament is Feb 11-22
-NHL Schedule resumes Feb 25

New Jersey Hockey Now: The Jack Hughes injury situation has continued to be, well, odd. Things look better. He is on the ice, but the Devils have not gotten word on when he will return, including his Olympic status.
