“I am so grateful to have shared this night with friends old and new, and deeply thankful to the Torgow family for making it possible.”

As Jewish college students, we are used to showing up for each other in times of hardship — lately, that has been far too often. Whether it is yet another wave of antisemitism on our campuses or heartbreaking news in the world, it feels like we are constantly carrying heavy emotional weight. So, when Hillel of Metro Detroit offered us the chance to gather for something joyful, a Red Wings game, I was in.

And, wow, did we need it.

Thanks to the generosity of Gary Torgow, we had the privilege of watching the Red Wings from the Huntington Bank suite at Little Caesars Arena. For many of us, it was a first-time experience. I will hesitantly admit that as a native Metro Detroiter, this was somehow my very first Red Wings game. I assure you; it will not be my last. Between the electric energy of the arena and the endless Detroit pride, we were energized.

What made the night truly special was not just the hockey, the win over Montreal, the kosher food or even the great seats (although those were amazing). It was the togetherness. In a time when our Jewish identities often feel like a target, we had the opportunity to come together not to mourn or to protest, but simply to be. We laughed, cheered and celebrated being young Jewish adults in Detroit — strong, present and proud.

Hillel of Metro Detroit continues to be that heartbeat for us, giving Metro Detroit students the chance to connect not only with each other but also with the broader Jewish community. Whether it is through learning, service or just a much-needed night out, HMD reminds us that joy is a form of protest, too.

I am so grateful to have shared this night with friends old and new, and deeply thankful to the Torgow family for making it possible. In a year that has been full of so many tears, it felt incredible to spend a night smiling — and yelling at the refs like real Detroiters do.

Next time I pull out a Red Wings jersey, I will not just be repping Detroit sports. I will be remembering this night — this community — and the strength that comes from showing up for each other not only in sorrow, but in celebration, too.

Go Wings and go HMD!
